About the Regents Exams

Common Core subjects:

Time allowed: 3 hours per exam

Test date(s): January, June, August

Format: Paper-based

Passing score: 65 or higher—College readiness score: 75+ (ELA), 80+ (Math)

The Regents Examinations assess subject mastery through:

Common Questions About Regents

When should preparation begin?

We recommend starting preparation at least 2-3 months before your exam date. This allows time to:

  • Review all required content
  • Practice test-taking strategies
  • Complete multiple practice exams
  • Address any knowledge gaps

How many Regents exams are required for graduation?

For a standard NYS Regents diploma, students must pass:

  • English Language Arts
  • Math (any one)
  • Science (any one)
  • Social Studies (any one)
  • Additional Regents exam in any subject

For an Advanced Regents diploma, requirements include:

  • English Language Arts
  • Three math exams
  • Two science exams (including one life science and one physical science)
  • Global History & Geography
  • U.S. History & Government
  • Language Other Than English exam

What scores do I need?

  • 65 or higher is considered passing
  • 75+ in English and 80+ in Math indicate college readiness
  • Some competitive colleges look for scores of 85 or higher
  • Advanced Regents diploma requires passing all required exams

How can I best prepare?

Success on Regents exams requires:

  • Strong understanding of subject content
  • Familiarity with question types and formats

Can I retake a Regents exam? Yes, students can retake any Regents exam to improve their score. There is no limit on the number of retakes, and only the highest score will appear on the transcript.
